Chizay Wine Run
Chizay Wine Run is an annual run organized by Chateau Chizay Winery, which takes place at the Mala Hora vineyard. It is a 3.5 km run through picturesque hills with steep elevation changes.
On August 24, 2023, the Chizay Sparkling Wine Run took place, this time dedicated to the sparkling wine Carpathian Sekt and, of course, Ukraine and in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Online registration and race organization were managed by our friends at the Uzhhorod Running Club. In 2023, there were two distance options: approximately 4.5 km and 9 km.
Chizay Wine Run 2024 is coming soon – stay tuned for the announcement!
Interestingly, this event has a backstory dating back a century and a half: in 1869, young teachers from Berehove, who had returned from studying in Budapest, established the first sports club in Transcarpathia and organized the first run in the Chizay area, which is mentioned in V. Fedak’s book on the history of sports in Transcarpathia.
Chizay Winery has decided to revive this beautiful tradition and start a new chapter in the history of sports festivities: Chizay Wine Run!
The first modern run took place on September 22, 2019. In September 2020, fifty runners participated, and in 2021, on September 12, 64 participants aged 10 to 60 from different parts of Ukraine and even from different countries such as the USA, France, Germany, and the Czech Republic ran around the grape hills. In 2023, the main idea of the run was to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with the emotion, of course, being faith in Victory.
Chizay Wine Run is the first Ukrainian wine run, a sports celebration in the vineyard, and it was immediately named the most beautiful in Ukraine.
Chizay Wine Run attracts both experienced athletes and amateurs. All participants talk about the special emotions of running through picturesque vineyards.
Chizay Wine Run has paved the way for original running events in Transcarpathia – so-called floristic runs dedicated to plants. For example, there are runs under cherry blossoms and through lavender fields. The Transcarpathian Tourism Association plans to expand the list of such events.
By the way, the area of the company’s plantations on Mala Hora near Berehove is 80 hectares, which allows even the possibility of laying out a half-marathon route, which is planned for the future.

A healthy and active lifestyle is not just a trend but a necessity for modern people. Today, various methodologies are popular for staying in shape – both traditional and innovative. Fitness, yoga, strength training, TRX, and others: the list is extensive. Of course, running is also in the spotlight. And the running movement is rapidly developing in Transcarpathia.
When a race takes place in nature and in such a unique and beautiful location as the vineyards of Chizay Winery, it’s not just beneficial but also beautiful and emotional. I recommend Chizay Wine Run to everyone, whether you’re an athlete, a race participant, or a trainer!
