Furmint Sur Lie is crafted from Furmint, the signature grape variety of Transcarpathia, grown in the Midianytsia terroir vineyards of Château Chizay. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected to ensure the highest quality.
Sur Lie, French for “on the lees,” refers to the traditional winemaking technique in which, after fermentation, the wine is left to mature on its fine yeast lees rather than being separated immediately. Before this stage, it is racked off the coarse lees.
The multifaceted character of Furmint is enhanced by three months of aging in oak barrels on fine lees with regular bâtonnage (lees stirring). This process gives the wine greater depth, softness, and a creamy texture while preserving the variety’s vibrant freshness.
Limited edition – only 1,895 bottles produced.
Gold Medal, Uwines Awards 2026 (93.4 points out of 100, one of the highest scores in the competition).
The wine presents a deep and elegant profile.
The bouquet reveals aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple, quince, and citrus, complemented by notes of brioche, almond, and delicate creaminess.
The palate is round and well-balanced, with smoothly integrated acidity, a creamy texture, and a long, refined finish featuring subtle almond and fruit nuances.
This wine combines the character of the Transcarpathian terroir with fine lees aging, showcasing a creamy texture, remarkable complexity, and a delicate balance between the Sur Lie and bâtonnage styles. It is Château Chizay’s first wine produced using this technique.
This layered and expressive wine deserves thoughtful tasting and refined food pairings. It is best enjoyed with seafood, white fish, young and soft cheeses, chicken in a creamy sauce, or asparagus risotto.
